Camera Shy Achievement Guide

Portal was one of the first games on Steam I managed to 100%. I got it as the Complimentary gift for joining Steam back in 2010. I wanted to revisit it recently and write a guide out for the Camera Shy Achievement.

This achievement is about detaching Security Cameras with the Portal Gun. As you would expect, that means this guide is written as if you've played through at least once and have a clear sense of all Chambers and their solutions along with all the game's mechanics. The cameras themselves will always be on walls that you must place an actual portal on as that is the only way to detach them. Not every Chamber will have cameras that you can detach and post-Chamber 19 there won't be any more.

NOTE: One major hurdle for this achievement is that you must detach all 33 in one run of the game. The same run with no loading. This is very similar to collectible achievements in other Valve games, like the Lamba Locator achievement in Half-Life 2.

This guide will cover the relevant Chambers and the whereabouts of each camera as they appear in your run. Do let me know in the comments if I can do any better with explanations or include better screenshots.

Let's get started.

1. The first camera will be at the entrance, which will remain open after you acquire the Portal Gun in the main room. Head back there and detach it by placing a Portal on the wall behind it.
2. The second is at the end of the hall you had to wait for the Portal to allow you into the main room.
3. The third is looking over the main room just above the observation window that you could see through while waiting for GlaDos to finish her dialogue. I sure hope Aperture Science has good dental benefits.

4. Right beside the plaque for Test Chamber 03, you'll find your first camera.
5. Turn and you'll be able to see the second as it will be on the opposite end of the gap GLaDOS mentions. You can detach it from here and move on.
6. The third camera lies beyond the 2nd gap near the exit.

7. The first camera here is right above the Heavy-Duty Super Colliding Super Button (which I will refer to as Button hereafter) near the entrance to Chamber 04.


8. The second camera is not too far away on the opposite wall near the exit.

9. With the first camera you can actually set your Portal on the wall behind it, but until you enter the main room of this chamber your Portal won't connect to its opposite. This is like the Portal version of walking away from an explosion.
10. The second camera is on the wall after you enter the main room. Right near the exit that requires 2 Buttons to open.
11. The third camera is in the room beyond the door, place your portal on the floor and you'll head through and you can detach it before leaving.

12. Chamber 10 is the beginning of the "Momentum" lessons. On the wall near the first staircase you have to throw yourself on, you'll find the first and only camera on your left.

13. The only camera for Chamber 11 will be above the archway in the observation room you start in.

14. Now with the Portal Gun capable of making 2 Portals you can make quick work of detaching cameras. In the first room with a Cube and Button, there is a camera right above the hallway you left where you exited the elevator.
15. In the main room, there is a second camera near the highest button platform (denoted as Button 1 contextually).
16. The third camera is in the exit room before the elevator.

17. The first camera is right at the beginning near the Chamber 15 plaque.
18. The second camera is in the room across the Emancipation Grill, very easy to spot above the doorway.
19. The third camera is right around the corner in the room to move the ball into the catcher.
20. The fourth camera is in the side room of the next area. You can see it through the top doorway once you've entered the room.
21. The fifth camera will be in the final room of this Chamber, it's at the end of the hallway with the moving platforms and acid.

22. Chamber 16 is the first time you'll be dealing with our little Turret friends. I really think they just want hugs. The first camera will be right in front of you after the door opens.
23. The second will come into view in almost the same way as you enter the next room after getting passed the first Turret.
24. The third camera will be on the wall at the top of the stairs with the Turret with the red X above her. I did get shot for this shot.
25. The fourth camera will be in the second section to the main room of the Chamber. It's on the back wall of the alcove.
26. The fifth camera is in the first of the two last rooms, before you get through the 2nd wall of grating. I have quite often missed this one during runs, I'm not sure if its where it is in the room that my eye just does not organically notice it. This may be one of the easier ones to miss during your run too.

27. Surprising for its size and design, Chamber 17 actually only has two cameras that are detachable. The first of which is at the end of the 2nd narrow hallway while getting to the main hall.


28. The second camera is in the main hall above the doorway that leads to the small room where you have to knock the ball into the Catcher while you're holding the Companion Cube.

29. Once you reach the main room of Chamber 18 with the Turrets, you'll find the first camera on the wall near the observation glass next to the panel you opened to get in. It actually peeks into the room as push the button.












30. Once you've cleared the door you've now opened with the Cube, head down the hallway and you'll find the second camera on the wall before you'll need to do the "Platforming" section.

31. The first camera will be to your right as you enter the first room.
32. The second camera is in the small alcove with the button you'll need to open the blast door to sneak through on to the moving platform. You'll need to be quick to detach this one as the platform moves very quickly.
33. Almost immediately after, as you make the turn, at the end of the first long part of the track with the green ball you need to redirect you'll be able to see the third camera. This will be the final camera of the run. Congratulations.
