Play Crysis on Steam as it was meant to be played [launch & crash fixes, texture & quality of life upgrades]

The original version of Crysis on Steam seems to be forgotten by EA, especially after the release of the “remastered” version (which bases on the Xbox 360 version of Crysis and has a ton of gameplay bugs compared to the original).

If you have just installed and tried to launch Crysis on Steam, you have probably seen this screen:

and then decided to go into the Discussion/Guides section to find a solution. And even if you got through it, what might be your next surprise is a black screen.

Fear not – this guide has all the information needed to get you up and running.

Key disclaimer: I have tested all of the following on Windows 10 64-bit. You might have to personally adjust the following tips to your own OS (i.e. running Crysis under Wine on Linux) in case of any problems, though I believe everything should run smoothly anyway.

The c1-launcher by ccomrade fixes most, if not all, issues in regards to launching Crysis.

1. Follow this link: https://github.com/ccomrade/c1-launcher/releases
   
2. Download the latest build of the c1-launcher, so at the time of writing it is this one:
   
   
3. After downloading, extract the package.
   
4. Copy both the Bin32 and Bin64 folders.
   
5. Go into your Crysis local files directory:
   
   
6. Paste the folders your main Crysis installation directory, overwriting all of the files.

You can now try to launch Crysis from the Bin64 directory – it should run correctly without asking you for a CD-key. However, we are not done yet.

Launching Crysis from Steam will still by default run it from the Bin32 Crysis executable. Time to change this.

1. Go into Crysis properties on Steam:
   
   
2. Go to Launch options:
   
   
3. Put this line there:

   "C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Crysis\Bin64\Crysis.exe" %command%

   Change the path accordingly to where your Crysis installation is located. Most likely you will have to only change the drive letter at the beginning.
   
4. Close the window and you should be good to go.

A Steam update of the web overlay in September 2022 has broken rendering with Crysis's use of DX10, meaning that you will not be able to see windows such as chats, the web browser, or your friends list. Instead, you will have grey windows rendered. The overlay will work functionally, so you will still be able to take screenshots via Steam and see notifications when gaming.

I advise to simply ALT+TAB to reach your browser or your messages on Steam, but if you must have the overlay fully working in-game, then put -dx9 after %command%, like this:

"C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Crysis\Bin64\Crysis.exe" %command% -dx9

Crysis will run with DirectX 9 when using the -dx9 command line parameter. This will mean that Crysis will not use DirectX 10 features, however the visual difference is small. If you wish, check this video for framerate and visual comparison:

Some people report missing text in main menu and the lack of subtitles, particularly people running localized versions other than English.

Using the c1-launcher usually fixes this. However, if the issue still appears, do the following:

1. Go into your Crysis local files directory:
   
   
2. Go to Game\Localized\ directory.
   
3. Rename your used game language file, for example English.lng, to Default.lng.

Crysis has a bug due to its (as far as I am aware) DirectX 10 usage, where running it in fullscreen forces the lowest refresh rate supported by your display.

The only fix I know that has always worked for me personally is the following:

1. Launch Crysis and go into Options -> System settings -> Graphics.
   
2. Make sure that “Fullscreen” is checked off (Click Apply if you had to change it).
   
3. Exit Crysis and launch it again.
   
4. The game should start in a window.
   
5. Press ALT+Enter to make the game fullscreen.

Now each time you would like to play Crysis, you just have to press ALT+Enter after launch. Although it is a bit cumbersome, it does work each time.

To improve the look of the game, while still staying true to the original, I recommend to use the Maximum Immersion Mod by OLP Team/Kanyhalos. It does not have a major impact on the mechanics of the game and does not use any post-processing effects such as ReShade, focusing mainly on improving the textures and already existing graphical effects.

1. If you have not launched Crysis yet, then launch it.
   
2. Set everything to Very High.
   
3. Set the motion blur slider to what you prefer – personally, I have it in the middle.
   
4. Now go into your My Games directory. In my case, the path would be:
   C:\Users\Vanmer(your user name)\Documents\My Games If you have OneDrive, it will be most likely located instead here:
   C:\Users\Vanmer(your user name)\OneDrive\Documents\My Games
   
5. Go to the Crysis\Shaders directory and delete the Cache folder. This is so that the shader cache will rebuild itself on the next launch to use the mod’s features.
   
6. Download the mod from here: https://www.moddb.com/mods/crysis-maximum-immersion-mod/downloads/crysis-maximum-immersion-mod
   
7. After downloading, extract the package.
   
8. Go into the Crysis directory inside (i.e. Crysis_Maximum_Immersion_Mod\Crysis).
   
9. Copy everything and paste into your main Crysis installation directory, overwriting all of the files.

If you wish to use the hotkeys provided by the author that make combat a bit easier, which are:

• Q – Armor mode
  
• E – Cloak mode

Then follow this:

1. Go into the extracted mod directory.
   
2. Go into the Documents\My Games\Crysis\Profiles\default directory (i.e. Crysis_Maximum_Immersion_Mod\Documents\My Games\Crysis\Profiles\default).
   
3. Copy the actionmaps.xml file.
   
4. Now go into your own Documents\My Games\Crysis\Profiles directory. In my case, it would be:
   C:\Users\Vanmer(your user name)\Documents\My Games\Crysis\Profiles If you have OneDrive, it will be most likely located instead here:
   C:\Users\Vanmer(your user name)\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Crysis\Profiles
   
5. Go into the \default\ directory, unless you have a different directory with your unique username – then go there instead.
   
6. Paste the actionmaps.xml file there and overwrite.

If you have a good graphics card, you can use tweaks provided by the author in the guide:

I personally use only r_ColorGrading=1, r_ColorGradingDOF=1 and e_shadows_max_texture_size=2048, since using e_lods=0 will make everything use the highest texture available at any distance – which will make your VRAM suffer. But experiment as you wish 😀

A different mod I can suggest to try out instead of Maximum Immersion Mod, if you wish to have that feeling as if you are playing Crysis for the first time ever, is Crysis Enhanced Edition: https://www.moddb.com/mods/crysis-enhanced-edition. The sheer size of the mod (~24 GB) and its development even in face of the “remastered” edition of Crysis show a huge love of the game by the authors. The minor issues I have personally with it at the time of writing are:

• Aggressive post-processing out-of-the-box (ReShade)
  
• No shotgun recoil
  
• Gun magazine capacities have been increased for most of the weapons

I understand that for some people these tweaks might be actually favourable, therefore I still recommend it for those. This guide will not provide information as to how to install it, as I find the original guide easy enough to follow. Remember however that Crysis EE is much more demanding than the mod used in this guide. On my laptop with AMD Ryzen 4800h and NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB, during gunfights my FPS count tended to drop below 50 even on the friendly autoexec provided by the authors, making the gameplay tough. Adjust your actions accordingly to your PC configuration.

If your Crysis installation is running well enough on any of the mods above, you can set Crysis to run at a higher resolution and then scale it down to your native resolution, resulting in an even “crispier” display.

1. Right click on your desktop display and go into the NVIDIA control panel.
   
2. Turn on (DL)DSR resolutions here:
   
   
3. Launch Crysis and select your desired resolution, like here:
   

Personally I use only DLDSR resolutions. This is because they use AI when downscaling to make it seem as if you were running your game at a higher resolution, so when you’re running the game at 2.25x native, for example 1080p -> 1620p, the effect should be as if you were running it at 4k instead (at least that’s what I understood myself from the explanations online). However, they are unfortunately only available to RTX cards, so if you’re running a GTX and other NVIDIA cards, you’re left with standard upscaling only. AMD only has standard upscaling options available:

1. Right click on your desktop display and go into the AMD Radeon Settings.
   
2. Go into Display and turn on Virtual Super Resolution:
   
   
3. Now you can launch Crysis and select your desired resolution.

If you are using standard upscaling, whether NVIDIA or AMD, use 2x your native resolution and then see whether you should go higher or lower with the resolution during gameplay.

To improve your FPS performance when upscaling, turn off antialiasing in Crysis and instead turn on FXAA in your GPU's control panel. It will still look crisp, while saving precious frames per second.

Uninstall GameSpy Comrade if you have had Steam install it when trying to launch Crysis from the launcher – as GameSpy is dead, the program is useless bloatware right now.

Also uninstall PunkBuster if you do not have any other (older) game using it.

If you’re experienced with FPS games and you would like Crysis 1 to make you think logically, I would actually recommend to go for the Delta (highest) difficulty. This will stop you from going head-on into gunfights and will make you use the overpowered functions of your nanosuit. And the Korean voices really make you feel that you are on enemy territory! The two main OP nanosuit functions that you might forget about (without gameplay experimentation) are:

• Speed: Reload and switch weapons in fractions of seconds
  
• Strength: Control recoil of your weapons

Even if you decide on a lower difficulty, remember if you want to make the most of Crysis, going in Armor mode 100% of the time makes you play a linear FPS like all of the other ones – which is boring! Use Cloak mode to move behind a squad, change to Strength to make quick headshots, and then turn to Armor. Generally Crysis really shines when you start to play more stealthily and use Cloak mode.

Cloak also works in vehicles, although enemies will still shoot you when you come close enough.

Silencers turn damage heavily down. Always have a second “loud” weapon prepared just in case, or be always ready to take off the silencer.
